The Swans Reserves remain on top of the AFL Canberra ladder after round 16, despite suffering their fourth loss of the season.

The Swans were defeated by last placed Tuggeranong at Greenway Oval in cold and windy conditions on Sunday. The loss was the Swans’ third in four weeks.

Daniel Currie was the Swans’ best playing in the ruck along with Gary Rohan, who played in attack, Sam Reid at centre half forward, Byron Sumner at half-back, and Chris McKaigue, who was full-back.

Top-up player Daniel Dickerson opened the scoring with a goal in the first 30 seconds after a centre clearance from Nick Smith.

A few minutes later, after Smith caused a turnover, Patrick Veszpremi kicked the Swans’ second on the run. After Tuggeranong goaled for the first time, Nathan Gordon received a quick handball and kicked a goal off one step from 40 metres to make it three for the Swans.

Tuggeranong kicked the next goal to make it three goals to two, but at the 22 minute mark Rohan took a strong pack mark and kicked truly from 30 metres. Tuggeranong managed another goal before the end of the term but after a tough quarter the Swans led by seven points.

The Swans extended their lead to 10 points by half time with just four goals kicked in the second term. Brett Meredith goaled at the nine minute mark after a free kick before Tuggeranong kicked their first goal of the quarter. At the 20 minute mark Matthew O’Dwyer kicked the Swans’ second goal from the goal square after a 50 metre penalty. Tuggeranong kicked the final goal of the term, after the siren, with a good kick from outside 50m.

The toughness of the game continued after half time with just two goals kicked in the third quarter. Reid received a free at the six minute mark and goaled from 30 metres and at the 18 minute mark Tuggeranong kicked their sole goal for the term. After a defensive quarter from both teams, with a number of players playing behind the ball, the Swans led by 12 points.

Both teams worked hard in the last quarter to get the win, but when it came to the death it seemed Tuggeranong wanted it more. The last term was an arm wrestle with Tuggeranong kicking the first goal of the quarter at the eight minute mark. After some good work out of defence by the Swans, Dylan McNeil kicked their only goal of the quarter after a mark from 50 metres. Tuggeranong piled on three goals before the final siren to run out eight point winners.

The Swans Reserves now meet second-placed Ainslie on Saturday 21 August at 2:10pm at the SCG. The game is the curtain raiser for the Swans and Western Bulldogs game at 7.10pm.
