Player Development Coach Steve Malaxos reviews the performances of Fremantle players who played in the WAFL Preliminary Final at the weekend.
Shane Parker (Subiaco) Possessions: 3 kicks, 8 handpasses, 2 marks.
Malaxos says: Shane had one of his typical solid defensive efforts. He played mainly on the smaller forwards like Tommy Corbett-Wynne and Keren Ugle so he didn’t play on the bigger forwards. He only played on Ryan Murphy for 5-10 minutes.
He defended quite well and won a few balls in contested situations that instigated attack.
Darren Rumble (Subiaco) Possessions: 6 kicks, 3 handpasses, 3 marks.
Malaxos says: Darren was a bit scratchy early but turned it on in the second half. He read the ball coming into defence a bit better and ran down the field a couple of times to create and become dangerous.
It was a good vote of confidence from (coach) Scott Watters to give him the roles he did. They probably felt they struggled a bit the week before in defence on the key forwards so I think they were pretty keen to get him back in.
Ryan Murphy (South Fremantle) Possessions: 11 kicks, 2 handpasses, 9 marks, 6 goals.
Malaxos says: Ryan played well at full forward. He kicked five goals in the first half and three in the first 15 minutes. His leading, marking and conversion were all outstanding. He kicked 6.2 and the two points hit the post. He went into the game with a bit of a groin problem that has gradually been getting worse so to play the way he did was a very good effort.
He had a number of opponents throughout the day but played mostly on Darren Rumble. He also played on Ben Randall, Aiden Parker and Shane Parker for a while.
He had a tough third quarter because the ball only went inside 50 twice in the first 15-20 minutes. If they had have been able to get the ball to him more, he was on target to kick a lot of goals.
Paul Duffield (South Fremantle) Possessions: 7 kicks, 14 handpasses, 5 marks.
Malaxos says: Paul worked pretty hard and linked up very well. He was going OK but in the second half Subiaco was on top and unless you were a South Fremantle forward you were constantly under siege from the Lions midfield.
