It's been a year of ups and downs for Ben Speight.

Arguably the player furthest from senior promotion at the end of last season, Speight worked hard through the summer months to put himself in the mix for NAB Cup selection.

While he missed out on both matches, a practice match against the Hawks where he was thrown in the deep end against Luke Hodge and Chance Bateman was a challenge Speight relished.

Only weeks after being promoted the South Australian broke his jaw and spent a month on the sidelines, but a return to VFL level saw him full of confidence and by round 18 Speight was running onto the ground and into the highlight reel as he kicked a running goal to remember in his first AFL game.

While he just played the two senior matches, Speight's dash through the midfield and half-forward line provided Brad Scott with another attacking option.

AFL.com.au’s Steve Lavell says: Broke his jaw in the VFL soon after his elevation to North's senior list. Played two AFL games late in the season but fractured his clavicle when he returned to Werribee. Deserved better.
