DESPITE appearing in just 13 games between them in 2009, premiership players Stephen Gilham and Rick Ladson have accepted two-year deals to remain at Hawthorn.

They join experienced backman Brent Guerra - also a member of 2008's flag triumph - and ruckman Simon Taylor, who have had their contracts extended by one year.

Gilham (10 games) and Ladson (three) were among the hardest hit by injury in the Hawks' disappointing campaign that saw them finish ninth.

Both players suffered knee injuries, with Ladson taking until round 13 to break into the side and playing no further part after round 15.

Gilham, the Hawks' first-choice full-back, was first injured in the NAB Cup and left a gaping hole in a defence that struggled to settle throughout the year.

Hawthorn general manager of football operations Mark Evans said Gilham and Ladson were keen to have a major impact in 2010 after their frustrating seasons.

"Stability and consistency in defence is the key to any success and it is great to have not only re-signed these players, but to have them all up and about and clearly looking forward to a full pre-season," he told hawthornfc.com.au.

Gilham has played 62 matches for the Hawks since crossing from Port Adelaide at the end of 2005, while Ladson (102 matches), Guerra (76) and Taylor (84) also command spots in their best 22 when fit.

Hawthorn has made strong moves to preserve its list this year. Vice-captain Luke Hodge signed a three-year deal earlier this month, following the commitment of Cyril Rioli, Brad Sewell, Grant Birchall, Xavier Ellis and Brendan Whitecross.
