Hawthorn Captain Sam Mitchell has undergone surgery to insert a plate to a slight fracture to his right hand.

The fracture was sustained at the start of the fourth quarter in Friday night’s win against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.

Hawks General Manager Football Operations Mark Evans, said the decision to insert a plate was taken after it became apparent that Mitchell would miss this weekend’s match against Geelong due to the injury.

“Sam underwent surgery last night,” said Evans.

“We had decided that inserting a plate was the best option as he would have missed this week match anyway due to the fracture.

“The plate will give him maximum strength around the fracture site and he is likely to only miss one to two weeks, depending on how it settles down.”

In other news, Rick Ladson will be discharged from hospital today, having been admitted over the weekend for observation following dehydration. The Hawks defender was a late withdrawal from Friday night’s team.
