With the birth of their first child imminent, McMahon made a bold and gutsy decision to miss North Melbourne’s all-important clash with Port Adelaide, instead choosing to be by Desiree’s side in case she goes into early labor.
“You want to play every game you can, but in saying that, you only have, depending on the person, one, two or three kids and obviously it’s my first child and to be honest you never want to miss the birth of your child,” McMahon told Radio National 927 hosts Tony Jones, Michael Christian and Adam White on Friday.
With possible complications at play, Desiree could require an emergency caesarian section meaning McMahon would be afforded little time to get to the hospital for the birth.
“If it was a Melbourne game then I would have played, it’s just that it is over in Adelaide and you’ve got an hour flight, so you miss about three hours.
“She (Desiree) did say it was up to me but I went and had a chat to Brad (Scott) to say how I was feeling and we ended up coming to the conclusion that, like he said in his interview, my mind…wouldn’t have been…one-hundred percent on the game which is where it needs to be so we decided just to miss this week.”
Getting back into the team might be another challenge for the 25 year-old if the side is successful against the Power on Sunday. McMahon joked he’d even consider naming the baby Brad if it helped ensure his selection.
“I might have to look into that, I’m not sure at the minute!”
