WEST Coast veteran Andrew Embley says his teammates have put their horror 2010 campaign behind them and have returned to pre-season training ready to make amends.

A number of senior Eagles launched their summer programs this week, joining those who have been in training since last Monday.

Embley said the players had returned in good shape and were renewed mentally, and that he was optimistic about the side's prospects in 2011.

"This year was disappointing, but that's behind us now and it's just a matter of really working hard - young guys, old guys - and hopefully together we can put in a really good season next year," he told westcoasteagles.com.au.

"We came back in really good shape, so that's a great start. That sort of shows that the guys are really keen to make amends for what has happened.

"This time last year a lot of people were saying that we were a chance to make the finals. Obviously it didn't go to plan, but we've got the same team and I think we've proven in the past that our best football's good enough to be extremely competitive.

"I think there's definitely character in the group and it's just a matter of putting it all together now."

Embley, who will turn 30 next season, is the second oldest player on West Coast's list, but the Norm Smith Medallist said his body was feeling fresh after avoiding surgery in the off-season.

The 2006 premiership star played his best football across half-forward late in 2010 and he was confident he could still have an impact rotating between half-forward and the midfield.

"It's the role that I do enjoy the most. It's just a matter of speaking to Woosh (coach John Worsfold), speaking to the coaching staff and finding out what role I can play for them and for the team," he said.

"I want to play as much footy as I can. Although I am getting a little bit old I still feel quite young mentally and physically and I'm really excited about the year ahead.

"I'll be certainly putting my best foot and I won't be going to Woosh and asking if I can have a rest during the season, that's for sure."
