CARLTON superstar Brendan Fevola is expected to train this week despite leaving the ground with a bruised heel in his team’s NAB Challenge loss to Fremantle at the weekend.

The Blues played Freo in their final hit-out ahead of the home and away season at Bunbury on Saturday and Fevola had been in sparkling form in the pre-season trial.

However Carlton general manager of football operations, Steven Icke, said the club took a careful approach with its goalkicker after he landed heavily.

“We think he’s okay; he came down and maybe just bruised his heel,” Icke told afl.com.au.

“As a precaution we took him off the ground because there was nothing to be gained by having him continue playing and making it any worse than it was.

“We don’t expect there’s going to be any complications.”

The Blues said Fevola was not on crutches but will be desperate to see how their key forward has pulled up from the weekend clash. Their round one match against Richmond at the MCG on March 26 is just over a week away.

“He might be a little bit sore to do most of the training [today] but we expect him to train unless something’s happened in between when we got off the plane yesterday and this morning,” Icke said.

“We think he’ll participate in all the training up until round one.”

Carlton is also hoping exciting youngster Shaun Grigg overcomes a hamstring niggle in time for the clash. He too left the field against Fremantle at the weekend.

“He [Grigg] pulled up a little bit tight, so we decided that precaution was the right way to go so we took him off the ground as well,” Icke said.

Dream Team watch – Carlton’s Brendan Fevola is rated a $366,700 forward in Toyota AFL Dream Team 2009.
