Barry Hall, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a Level Two attempting to strike offence against Shane Wakelin, Collingwood, during the second quarter of the Round 14 match between Sydney and Collingwood, played at ANZ Stadium on Saturday July 5, 2008.
In summary, his penalty is increased to a one-game sanction, even with an early plea, due to an existing bad record and carry-over demerit points from within the last 12 months.
The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), impact is not applicable (no points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has an existing bad record of seven matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 50 per cent to 120 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has 90 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 210 demerit points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a 157.50 points and a one-match sanction.
Other Incidents Assessed:
Contact between Adelaide's Brett Burton and Geelong's Joel Selwood from the first quarter of Friday's game was assessed. It was the view of the panel that Selwood had his head down chasing the ball as both players approached the contest. Burton did not turn side-on to bump Selwood. Contact was made to Selwood's shoulder and not head. The panel believed that contact was unavoidable and that Burton had no realistic alternative manner to contest the ball. No further action was taken.
Contact between Collingwood's Travis Cloke and Sydney's Lewis Roberts-Thomson from the fourth quarter of Saturday's match was assessed. Cloke's action was a push to the chest that slipped upwards, making incidental high contact. No further action was taken.
