MIKE Pyke had one of his best games in the red and white on Saturday but coach John Longmire has revealed the Canadian ruckman tore his quad muscle in the third term.

Longmire said today that it was a “reasonable tear’’ and Pyke would miss three to four games.

It’s unfortunate news for Pyke and the Swans as the rugby convert had slotted in well since being elevated to the senior side for the matches against Carlton and the Western Bulldogs.

Pyke supported Shane Mumford in the ruck and also performed well in the forward line. He kicked two goals against the Dogs, including a 50m set shot after the siren at the first break, and a soccered goal in the third term.

Longmire praised Pyke for his ability to continue improving.

“It’s amazing how quickly Pykey learns.  To play senior AFL  football the year after you’ve seen the ball for the first time, let alone played the game before is amazing. His improvement is incredible. He’s a real athlete and his ability to learn is fantastic,’’ he said.

“The disappointing thing for him is he has torn his quad so he’s going to miss a few weeks now. He got back into some good form and contributed well on the weekend but he’s had the hiccup with his leg and will miss three to four weeks.

Longmire said ruckman Mark Seaby, who has only played one senior game this season and has spent the rest of his time in the reserves, would come into contention, as would Lewis Roberts-Thomson and Jesse White.

“Seabs had two serious ankle operations last year and he’s just getting back and moving well now and Jesse’s form over the last couple of weeks was a bit disappointing but he was playing ruck-forward as well which is something he has to get used to,’’ Longmire said.

“Seabs is not that far away, it is just a matter of persisting and getting his run and confidence up after two pretty big operations last year. It just takes a bit of time and we’re pretty confident he can get back to that form.

“The good thing is we have some flexibility with Seaby, Jesse White  and Lewis Roberts-Thomson, who can also play forward,  to hopefully come in and fill that spot.
We haven’t had match committee and haven’t had a chance to look at Port’s team so we’ll do that in the next couple of days and see which mix suits us.’’
