IT’S NOT ABOUT WHO, IT’S ABOUT HOW

Or to put it another way...

MORE GREY AREAS THAN A SCOTTISH SKY

Huddled in the Ponny Stand on Saturday, my knees shaking like a tin can at the traffic lights, teeth chattering like two nannas at the supermarket and nose running like a Frenchman from the front line, I stared incredulously at a sight I’d never seen before.

No, not Fraser Gehrig smiling and shaking hands with the Collingwood Cheer Squad.

No, not Steven Baker congratulating his Collingwood opponent on a splendid bit of play.

It was far more sinister than that.

The half time break was all but finished and the umps from the Auskick game formed a guard of honour for the green goblins who had systematically tried to destroy the crowd’s enjoyment of the first half!

Call me Jim Nabors, but I must have been living under a rock, coz I’ve never witnessed this nonsense before.

A bloody guard of honour!!!!!
For the job they did?

Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to turn this into some kinda umpy bashing rant. Many far more respected and astute judges than me have let fly post match already.
If anything I’m glad those guys were actually out there umpiring.
Could you imagine if their Saturday jobs were a traffic cop, surgeon and fireman?
Now that IS scary.

But as I watched them self righteously marching out I couldn’t help feeling that something wasn’t quite right.

And then it struck me!

This was Heritage Round.
Why weren’t they wearing white?
And, come to think of it, why were the Saints gallivanting around in what appeared to be grandpa’s old white undies and singlet?
The only thing 70’s about the whole game was St. Kilda’s capitulation & the old couple sitting in front of me!

And then it struck me again!

This whole ‘Heritage’ charade isn’t designed for Collingwood supporters.
It’s actually designed for the disenfranchised, the disillusioned and the dispossessed.
It’s for all the ‘supporters’ whose Clubs have sold out, moved out or dropped out.

You only had to take one look at the shenanigans going on in the other games to understand it.

The Bullies were playing some side that actually plays in a different league entirely. While over in the west a club that no longer exists was playing a state of origin club!
Meanwhile Freo, bless their heave-hoeing hearts, turned up in a blue number –  a jumper the club has never worn and at the same time just about completing the full spectrum of a rainbow in colours they actually have worn now.

The whole thing has me baffled.

As far as I can see the only people championing this masquerade were the media, who for some strange reason, think it’s amusing to dress up in 70’s gear themselves – which probably was funny once. Just not any more.

But I must say I’m more than happy for the League to continue with these meaningless theme days that see other clubs play fancy dress games.

I’m just glad I barrack for the Pies.
Coz when you pull in 57,000+ on a wet and windy day you don’t need to play dress ups!!!!
