KANGAROOS coach Dean Laidley has hit back strongly at comments by former teammate and club great Wayne Carey who has called for Laidley to be replaced by Sydney Swans assistant coach John Longmire.
"I've got news for him, I'm certainly the man for the job," Laidley said after the Kangaroos' NAB Challenge Series match against St Kilda at MC Labour Park on Friday.
Flanked by club president Graham Duff and chief executive Rick Aylett, Laidley said he had enjoyed strong support from within the club since Carey made his call on 3AW on Thursday for Longmire, a 1999 premiership team-mate, to be handed the reins at Arden Street.
"Wayne Carey wants to come and help the football club - things like that don’t help the football club," Laidley said.
"(He's) put himself first and I suppose he has a bit of a history of doing that over the last few years.
"I've had wonderful support over the last 24 hours from the president right through to the CEO and (football operations manager) Donald (McDonald).
"Wayne's always done things like that and will continue to do things like that and it's water off a duck's back, so to speak."
Laidley stressed that rebuilding would take some time, but that the redevelopment of Arden Street and the push towards the Gold Coast made for exciting times at the Kangaroos.
