Anthony Rocca, Chris Tarrant and Jarrod Molloy were unstoppable in the forward line, as the Magpies showed no signs of missing their injured captain and surged to a comprehensive 19.20 (134) to 8.9 (57) win.
Melbourne was hit hard with the late withdrawal of key forward Jeff Farmer, who kicked nine in the corresponding match last year. Farmer failed to shake off a long-term hamstring injury.
When 150-gamer David Schwarz limped off in the first quarter, with what looked like a buttock strain, the Demon attack was impotent in comparison to the power of the Magpie forwards.
Collingwood looked intent on highlighting that strength continually, with Rocca dominant, Tarrant at his spectacular best, including a legitimate contender for mark of the season, and Molloy also effective.
The Magpies looked confident and arrogant from the start, when Rocca marked in the goalsquare and cheekily thrust the ball into the face of opponent Troy Simmonds.
The margin was out to 26 points at the first change, with Dees skipper David Neitz the only player offering resistance.
Seven minutes into the second quarter Tarrant provided the highlight of the day, when he leapt from deep over the top of a pack and clung to a superb mark.
The gap stood at 21 points entering time-on and Melbourne still had an undeserved chance.
However Rocca and Tarrant, who terrorised the Demon defence all day, added late majors to push the gap to six goals at half-time and the contest was petering out.
Melbourne, perhaps thinking it could leave it all to the final quarter like last week against St Kilda, allowed Collingwood to roll on almost unchallenged in the third term, with the margin nine goals at the final change.
The Demons' last-quarter performance was the worst of all terms, failing to make any challenge against a tiring and indulgent Collingwood, allowing the final margin to extend to embarrassing levels.
