On Monday September 8, the AFL Players’ Association will announce the Most Valuable Player Awards for 2008. These are the only awards determined by the players themselves.

Every AFL player in the competition voted fro the three teammates whose form warranted consideration for the prestigious Leigh Matthews Trophy for the Most Valuable Player. All AFL players then vote as to which of the 48 nominees (three from each club) deserves to be this year’s Most Valuable Player. Players cannot vote for their own teammates.

Each player will also vote on the other award categories; Most Courageous Player, Best First Year Player and Best Captain.

Leigh Matthews Trophy for Most Valuable Player
Carlton nominees: Brendan Fevola, Chris Judd and Nick Stevens
This is the first time Brendan Fevola has been nominated for the award.

The Best First Year Player
Not surprisingly Carlton’s nomination is Matthew Kreuzer

Robert Rose Award for Most Courageous Player
Carlton’s nomination is Simon Wiggins

And of course Chris Judd is in the running for the Best Captain Award.

The Awards will be announced on Monday September 8 at Melbourne’s Grand Hyatt with Fox Sports broadcasting the function.
