The Lions wrapped up their Community Camp in Toowoomba today with visits to regional areas and umpiring local junior footy.

The team split into groups of three and took to local schools to run footy clinics, talk to the kids and spread some community spirit to an area that has had a tough run over the past month.

Jonathan Brown, Bryce Retzlaff and Matt Austin visited Grantham State School where they had a chat to the entire school about what it takes to play footy.

The three guys then went out onto the oval and had a kick with some of the local junior talent.

The bright and happy attitudes of the kids at Grantham was an inspiration considering the town was ravaged by floods just weeks ago.

Matt Austin said that driving through Grantham was a real eye-opener.

“We got hit in Brisbane but out here in Grantham is total devastation,” Austin said.

“There isn’t a house or business that hasn’t been damaged by the floods. Driving through the main street, everything is a write off.”

Bryce Retzlaff said that all the players were blown away by the attitudes of the locals.

“It’s fantastic to see the kids still with smiles on their faces and it’s an absolute credit to them to go through that kind of tragedy and still have that spirit,” Retzlaff said.

Following the school visits in the morning, the Lions headed back to Queens Park in Toowoomba to test out their coaching and umpiring skills in local junior footy.

Lions defender Tom Collier said he had a newfound appreciation for umpires.

“It’s tough to have all that responsibility and the fitness level required is amazing. I turned around after one call and the play was already down the other end so off I went again,” Collier said.
