NORTH Melbourne captain Adam Simpson has signalled his teammates are on notice, echoing coach Dean Laidley's post-match sentiments from the disappointing loss to St Kilda.

Simpson revealed the club spent the week off ruing the defeat and addressing what needs to be done to get its season back on track from 10th place.

"It was disappointing," he said on Tuesday. "The same thing happened last year [when] we lost on the Gold Coast against Adelaide. It certainly wasn't party time after the game, I can tell you that.

"After the Hawthorn win, the boys were up and about and it was really disappointing how we finished off that game. There was a bit of soul-searching, but this week we've been full steam ahead."

The 32-year-old dismissed the notion his side was left fatigued after the build-up to the emphatic win over the Hawks, and that it was the reason for the fade-out against the Saints after leading at three-quarter time.

Instead, Simpson blamed a trait that continues to linger. Inconsistency.

"St Kilda really picked up their play in the second half and we've got some players who are inconsistent across the board, across weeks, games, quarters," he said. "We just don't have that same consistency that we perhaps had last year.

"It's a hard thing to get consistency, probably the hardest thing in AFL. Time will tell, but some guys have definitely been put on notice.

"[It's] probably too early in the week to tell [if players will be dropped].

"We've done a few things differently around the club this week and last week, so hopefully you'll see a change in the next eight weeks."

This season, the Kangaroos are the only team to have beaten the Western Bulldogs, one of two to have toppled Hawthorn and lost to premier Geelong by just 13 points.

And they drew with the fourth-placed Swans in round six.

But hefty losses have come to Adelaide (sixth), the Brisbane Lions (seventh), Essendon (12th) and Fremantle (14th).

"It's funny, last year we couldn't beat the top teams," Simpson said. "That was a real stumbling block for us. This year we can't beat the teams that are roundabouts, in the same position [or] even lower.

"The season's not catching up with us. I don't think the guys are tired, I don't think the break came at a good time for us.

"We're still in the hunt, we're not worried about finals or not making finals or playing kids.

"We just want to win this week."
