FREMANTLE has comfortably beaten West Coast by 33 points at Subiaco Oval to send off Shaun McManus with a memorable win.
With Luke McPharlin booting five goals and Matthew Pavlich dominating all day with four goals and 22 possessions, Fremantle was far too strong for West Coast, running out winners 17.14 (116) to 12.11 (83).
The win takes Fremantle above Port Adelaide into 13th position, while West Coast remains just one game ahead of last-placed Melbourne.
It was the ideal way to salute McManus, who retires after 228 games as the last surviving member of Fremantle's first AFL side in 1995. McManus was far from a passenger in his farewell appearance, finishing with 21 possessions and 10 marks.
Despite an early surge from the Eagles, Fremantle dominated for the majority of the game in front of the biggest crowd at Subiaco for the year.
The 42,096 turnout eclipsed the attendance for the Tri-Nations rugby Test between Australia and South Africa, and much of that can be attributed to the Fremantle fans wanting to farewell McManus.
Byron Schammer also continued his brilliant late season midfield form with 24 possessions, Josh Carr found touch with two goals and 23 disposals, with Michael Johnson also having 22 and David Mundy 20.
Ryan Crowley continued his tremendous tagging year, keeping Andrew Embley to just 15 disposals.
It was another tough day out for West Coast, but Mark LeCras was tremendous with four goals and received good support from Ben McKinley up forward, who kicked two from 18 possessions.
Steven Armstrong put in a good performance to retain hope of playing on next year with 24 touches, with Dean Cox racking up another 25, Brad Ebert 22, Quinten Lynch 23 and David Wirrpanda 20.
West Coast opened up an 11-point lead early in the first term after three quick goals in response to Carr kicking the first of the match, but Fremantle booted the last five goals leading into quarter time.
McPharlin and Pavlich both kicked three goals in dominating displays and when the umpire gifted David Mundy a goal after McPharlin kicked his third, Fremantle led by 31 points.
The 9.2 quarter equaled Fremantle's greatest ever first quarter in the AFL and is the best in a derby.
After burning off Eric MacKenzie and Beau Wilkes, McPharlin had West Coast captain Darren Glass move onto him in the second quarter but that didn’t stop him kicking his fourth goal.
Lynch then kicked a long goal to give West Coast some hope, but that was quickly shut out when Pavlich booted his fourth from just inside 50 near the boundary and when Mundy soccered through his second in the goal square Fremantle's lead was out to 41 leading into the long break.
West Coast mounted a comeback to start the third quarter, with goals to LeCras, McKinley and Mark Seaby bringing the Eagles to within 25 points, but Fremantle steadied with McPharlin's fifth and a goal to Kepler Bradley.
McKinley added another for West Coast but goals to Bradley and Carr leading into three-quarter time saw Fremantle 45 points up and the win secure.
West Coast kicked the only two goals of the final quarter through LeCras and Scott Selwood, but Fremantle was always going to win its 10th match from 28 tries against the Eagles.
Fremantle 9.2 13.5 17.10 17.14 (116)
West Coast 4.1 6.6 10.7 12.11 (83)
