ONE OF five North Melbourne players to earn selection for this month's International Rules Series, veteran Brent Harvey believes the experience of representing Australia will benefit his teammates when they prepare for next season.

Harvey, 30 and with seven International Rules matches to his credit, was the oldest player picked by coach Mick Malthouse in a squad heavily focused on speed and youth.

He is joined by Drew Petrie, Daniel Wells, Michael Firrito and Matt Campbell, with Wells the only one of those to have played for his country before.

And North has more representatives in the squad than any other club; Port Adelaide is next with three.

"It is fantastic," said Harvey, who last played for Australia in 2005.

"Just for us five to have that experience of playing for Australia with other players, I reckon it's only going to benefit [us] coming back next year for the experience, especially the young guys [like] Matty Campbell.

"To get that exposure playing for Australia, to come back next year, they're going to be bigger and stronger and better."

It was confirmed last month that Harvey would forego thumb surgery and protect what may be a final chance to play for his country.

"I was going to get a thumb operation but it's not super-important, it's not a thing that bothers me," he confirmed. "I can put it off till next year.

"I have the opportunity to play for Australia. You don't want to turn that up too often because you don't know how often it's going to come around."

The series will conclude another terrific year for the midfielder, his 13th at the level, which earned a fourth Syd Barker Medal and All-Australian selection.

However, Harvey is most excited about the short-term prospects for North Melbourne and the expected response of a young list disappointed with seeing its season end in an elimination final.

"Gavin Urquhart, Lachlan Hansen, Lindsay Thomas, Matty Campbell, Ben Ross, the list goes on and on," he said.

"I'm really excited ... to be part of this footy team that [can] really go somewhere."
