We’re down to the single digits and coming in at no.9 is the 2006 preliminary final.

While the 2006 premiership will always hold a special place in the hearts of West Coast fans around the country, the grand final berth would not have been possible without an electrifying win against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium the week before.

Although the team was 22 points down at half-time, belief never wavered and the players left nothing behind as they strangled the Crows to win the match by 10 points.

Premiership hero Daniel Kerr says he never doubted the team’s ability to come away with a victory.

“I mustn’t have been the only one with that feeling,” Kerr said.

“I can remember going in at 22 points down and thinking that we had them. It was probably a little bit arrogant, probably the team was a little bit arrogant back then, it’s a different case now, but that’s how I felt.

“I was never really nervous about not playing the next week, I just thought as long as we stuck within a reasonable margin we’d steamroll them at the end.”

Many players cited previous come-from-behind victories that season as important blueprints for the Adelaide win, the team having overcome hefty deficits against both Geelong and Carlton to be in front by the final siren.

“We came in at half-time with a big deficit but to see the changerooms, it was like we were in front during that game,” Dean Cox said.

“I think the voice, the encouragement to one another was the best I’d seen it all year. I think because we’d beaten Geelong from far behind in games, and we did it against Carlton, we just realised that we had a massive half ahead of us to reach a grand final again and the boys dug deep, they were prepared to do the work and got the result we were after.”

Although the following week resulted in a premiership victory, the players and coaches involved say it was the preliminary final that they will never forget.

“It was an absolute cracker,” Andrew Embley said.

“We’ve gone over there and anyone who’s ever played at Adelaide or even been to Adelaide, their crowd is loud, they get right behind their team.

“A lot of people talk about the ‘06 grand final being the best game that we’ve all played in, but in my opinion, the 2006 preliminary final to this day is the best game I’ve ever been involved in.”
