DANIEL Rich says keeping the young Brisbane Lions group together is crucial and will play a major role in him re-signing with the club.
Rich is in the final year of a three-year contract and, along with fellow out-of-contract players Matthew Leuenberger and Mitch Clark, is seen as a cornerstone of the club's future.
The 2009 NAB Rising Star winner has been in stellar form of late, and was a driving force behind Sunday's 40-point win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium with 22 disposals, seven tackles, six marks and a goal.
"Every really good team that performs well has a young group of guys that comes through together at the same time," Rich said.
"You've seen it with teams going well now like Collingwood and Geelong and teams like that, so it's exciting times heading forward if we can keep the young group together.
"It's 100 per cent my decision and he (manager Paul Connors) is just there to help me and guide me, but it (keeping the young group together) definitely plays a big part."
While Connors is currently negotiating Rich's long-term future with the club, the 20-year-old said he was focused more on the short-term and extending the Lions' two-match winning streak.
Rich has the same manager as ruckman Leuenberger but said the pair did not talk about their contracts.
Aside from WA trio Rich, Leuenberger and Clark, the Lions have developed a core group of youngsters under the age of 21 that includes Tom Rockliff, Jack Redden and Todd Banfield.
They have also debuted seven players this season - Claye Beams, Rohan Bewick, Ryan Lester, Jared Polec, Bryce Retzlaff, Broc McCauley and Josh Green.
"There's some great young players coming through. It's good to see the young guys getting games and performing well and stepping up and playing well in games where we need them," Rich said.
The left-footer said coach Michael Voss had to take a lot of credit for keeping the Lions' players in a positive frame of mind despite a 0-7 start to the season.
"He always had the belief in us as players, and you can sense that as players as well. That was a big thing, turning up week in and week out ready to perform.
"I suppose it's about learning from those first few weeks. We haven't changed much at all to be honest.
"We've had to tweak a few things here and there, but the big focus has been believing in our structures and the coaches and the way they want us to play and sticking by that."
