West Coast has unveiled two of its newest recruits from Saturday's 2006 NAB AFL draft, with WA pair Eric Mackenzie and James Thomson arriving at their new club for the first time.Mackenzie, a strong defender from Claremont, held down full-back in this year's NAB AFL U18 Championship, and West Coast jumped at the chance to snare the 18-year-old with its second pick, No.29 overall. The 196cm key position player said he had modeled his game on Eagles pinch-hitter Adam Hunter and wanted to make a name for himself in West Coast's backline."That's where I've played my footy recently and I enjoy it down there," Mackenzie said."It would be a tough squad to break in to - the premiers. I'd like to think I've got a chance to break in but it's just (a year to) develop more and get a lot stronger next year.""It's a dream come true (to be drafted by the Eagles). I was just stoked that I'm staying here at home just down the road."Thomson was taken with the Eagles' final pick of the draft, No.80 overall, and was thrilled to be staying in his home state with family and friends."I was happy to go and play footy anywhere, let alone playing for the home side in the Eagles straight after a premiership," Thomson said."I've got a lot of work to do, I'm pretty raw so all I want to do is get down here and work as hard as I can and hopefully get an opportunity."Thomson missed out on WA U18 selection when he fractured his fibula during the season. The fracture was originally diagnosed as a muscle injury, but after a month of playing through the pain, Thomson had a bone scan on his leg that correctly revealed the extent of the damage. The Eagles snapped up Mitchell Brown with their first pick at No.16, while West Coast used its third pick to draft Tim Houlihan (43rd selection overall) and fourth pick to snare Will Schofield (50th overall).Brown, whose twin brother Nathan was taken by Collingwood with pick No.10, has an elite basketball background and has displayed elite aerobic capacity for a tall forward.Houlihan represented Vic Country U18 and is a hard running defender with an impressive athletics background. The 17-year-old clocked the fastest time over three kilometres at the recent NAB AFL draft camp, and also recorded a sub three-second time for 20m.Schofield has the ability to play as a tall or medium and represented Vic Country at U16 level in 2005. The 195cm 17-year-old is expected to fulfill a role in West Coast's backline in the future.
