Brisbane Lions small man Shaun Hart will spend Saturday night in hospital after suffering a nasty facial cut during the preliminary final win over Geelong.

The injury means that Hart, the 2001 Norm Smith medallist is all but certain to miss his club’s attempt at a fourth-straight grand final win, next Saturday against Port Adelaide.

Hart collided with team made Daniel Bradshaw at the 19-minute mark of the third term of the match at the MCG and was forced from the ground with blood streaming from his face. He didn't return.

"Shaun unfortunately has got quite a nasty facial injury so he's off to hospital," coach Leigh Matthews said after the match.

Also, Craig McRae suffered a slight hamstring strain and will be monitored during the week in the lead up to the clash against Port.

"I'm not sure where that leaves him for next week," Matthews said of his small forward, who will retire at the end of this season.

Matthews indicated forward Jonathan Brown pulled up a bit sore after knocking his knee against Darren Milburn in an opening term marking contest, but should be alright.

He indicated Alastair Lynch's inaccurate kicking at goal was possibly the result of a tight left quad.

"I don't think it was anything to do with his hamstring, or his calf for that matter. The reason that he was a bit iffy this week was the calf tightness."

"His hamstring proved to be okay early the week but then he got a sore calf and a bit tight in his quad as well. All his muscles are arcing up a bit."

There were a couple of other incidents, notably Luke Power's being floored by Steve Johnson, who was reported for the second-term collision.

"He got badly knocked over but fortunately not enough to stop him coming back on 10 or 15 minutes later and being good. He certainly got the stuffing knocked out of him."

"He's a very courageous player, Luke."
