GEELONG's depth of talent has again been reflected in the All Australian squad with seven of its 40 players picked for possible inclusion in this year's team.

Minor premier Collingwood has five representatives while third-placed St Kilda has four, with Brownlow Medal fancies Dane Swan and Brendon Goddard among those selected.

The competition's other top-four side, the Western Bulldogs, also have four players.

Seventeen players in the squad are pushing to make the final team for the first time: Darren Jolly, Harry O'Brien, Scott Pendlebury, Jobe Watson, David Mundy, James Kelly, Harry Taylor, James Frawley, Brad Green, Mark Jamar, Brady Rawlings, Andrew Swallow, Brett Deledio, Nick Malceski, Shane Mumford and Mark LeCras.

Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt, fresh from winning the Coleman Medal for the most goals kicked this year, has also been selected for the first time.

Adelaide, the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide are the three clubs to miss out on representation.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said selection in the squad was recognition for a tremendous year and should be held in high esteem.

"All-Australian selection is a great honour also because of the quality of those players you have competed against to win your spot," he said.

"The selectors nominated the 40-best players of the year to highlight the outstanding players who are in contention for selection as one of the elite players of the season."

The selection panel, comprising of Demetriou, Adrian Anderson, Kevin Bartlett, Gerard Healy, James Hird, Glen Jakovich, Mark Ricciuto and Robert Walls, finalised the squad on Tuesday.

Healy and Walls have announced their retirement from the panel, which was asked to name the best players as opposed to the leading contributors in each section of the field.

The final team of 22 will be named on Monday, September 13 in Melbourne and will reflect the best team balance as if to play a match.
