MORE than one million AFL fans have already been through the gates at the MCG, with almost two-thirds of the season, plus finals, still to come.

The home of football has hosted 19 matches, with an average of 53,664 spectators attending each game.

With the ability to watch live football anywhere via the AFL app, as well as on free and subscription TV, fears that fans might reconsider attending games at the code's biggest venue in favour of the comfort of their lounge rooms have proved unfounded.

"While the season is still young, MCG crowds in the first eight rounds have been encouraging, especially considering the ladder positions of a couple of our big-drawing tenant clubs," MCC spokesman Shane Brown told AFL.com.au.

"We have hosted some marquee occasions, including Anzac Day, the Anzac Day eve match and a blockbuster opening round, along with other themed events such as the Breast Cancer Network Australia Pink Match and last Saturday’s Country Game."

More than 217,000 fans flocked to the stadium's three opening round games, contributing to the mega crowds.

Brown said overall attendances were tracking well compared to most recent seasons.

"Free entry for kids to the National Sports Museum, as well as a post-game kick on the turf, has made Sunday matches even more attractive for families, while we continue to provide the best value food and drink offering of any Australian stadium, all season long.

"There are more special events coming up, including Dreamtime at the 'G on Saturday week and Big Freeze 3 on Queen's Birthday."
