FREMANTLE players and staff are being monitored for symptoms of swine flu after a passenger on their flight home from Melbourne on Saturday night tested positive to the pandemic virus.

None of the Fremantle group has shown any symptoms so far but the club has contacted the WA Health Department and will continue to keep an eye on everyone on the Qantas flight.

Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said that the 40 players and staff that were on the Saturday night flight had been briefed on what course of action to take should they show any symptoms.

“We are following the Health Department’s guidelines on this matter,” Rosich said.

“Our initial understanding was that none of the players or staff in the official travelling party were exposed to the passenger and, in accordance with the Health Department’s guidelines, no one in the official travelling party on Qantas flight 481 will be required to be quarantined.”

However, after further investigation by the club it was established that a member of the administrative staff, who was not part of the official travelling party, was sitting in close proximity to the passenger.

“As a result, this staff member is receiving direct advice from the Health Department and our club doctor,” Rosich said.

Fremantle was returning home after its 13-point loss to North Melbourne and will host Richmond at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

Rosich said the flu scare would not hinder the side's preparations this week.

"We have no concerns for our players' ability to prepare for Saturday night's game against Richmond, however, all players will be closely monitored over the next few days," Rosich said.

WA Health Minister Kim Hames confirmed on Monday the 30-year-old man was WA's first case of swine flu, and the 16th official case in Australia.
