West Coast Eagles coach John Worsfold was left to lament the absence of his team's star forwards Phillip Matera and Andrew McDougall through injury as he watched Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola dominate Saturday night's Wizard Home Loans Cup grand final at Telstra Dome.

Worsfold admitted after the game the difference between the two teams was the effectiveness of the Blues' attack compared to that of his own team as the Blues' lifted their first pre-season trophy since 1997 with a 1.14.18 (111) to 1.11.9 (84) victory.

Fevola kicked eight goals in a match-winning display while in contrast Worsfold was left to lament wasted opportunities.

"We certainly didn't convert some easy opportunities when we had players in space," Worsfold said.

"We had some poor disposal kicking to our targets and a couple of dropped marks (in attack)."

"That was the difference in that Brendan Fevola held his marks under more pressure while we didn't hold ours under less pressure."

Worsfold also admitted the Eagles did not work as hard during the grand final as they had during their barnstorming run to the pre-season decider.

"I thought overall we didn’t work as hard over the four quarters as we did in the past and Carlton didn't drop off their work-rate," he said.

"That was the main message…that we were off the mark a little bit but we still gained a lot out of tonight."

Worsfold said the big game atmosphere and playing in front of a massive pro-Carlton crowd would do some of his youngsters the world of good.

"That will help us a heap, no doubt about that," he said.

"All of our guys benefited from tonight's hit-out which was a bonus and it caps off our preparation for the (home and away) year."
