The champions were joined by Hall of Fame Tribute Match contenders, Geelong’s Paul Chapman and Richmond spearhead Matthew Richardson, at a media conference in the National Sports Museum at the MCG on Wednesday morning.
Triple Brownlow Medallist and 26-time Victorian representative Bob Skilton said the players would warmly embrace the chance to wear the Big V against a Dream Team of players from the rest of Australia.
“I’m thrilled to see the Big V on the MCG again. This is a fantastic opportunity for the best 50 of today’s players to be a part of this match,” he said.
Peter Hudson said he was looking forward to the best 25 players from throughout Australia taking on Victoria.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for both the players and football fans. I’m looking forward to some fantastic contests. The Dream Team will be bursting with great talent,” he said.
Australian football Hall of Fame inductee and former VFL President Dr Allen Aylett was also present to reflect on the medal struck in his honour.
AFL general manager football operations Adrian Anderson said the medal recognised the role Dr Aylett played in the expansion of the game while he was VFL president from 1977 to 1984.
”Dr Aylett’s foresight to play league matches in Sydney paved the way to the national competition we know today,” Anderson said.
The Hall of Fame Tribute Match is a key feature of the Australian football 150 years celebrations.
The match will honour the greats of the game at the birthplace of football.
Victoria will be coached by Mark Thompson and captained by Jonathan Brown while the Dream Team is led by Mark Williams and Andrew McLeod.
The match will be a fundraiser for charity, with a key component to be directed towards the AFLPA health hardship fund to assist former players.
The Tribute Match will also count towards consideration for selection for the 2008 All-Australian side.
The Victorian team will be sponsored by the AFL’s premier partner, Toyota, with the Dream Team being sponsored by Carlton Draught.
Tickets to the Australian Football Hall of Fame Tribute Match are now available at Ticketmaster.
