NORTH Melbourne captain Adam Simpson believes a couple of his teammates might have been unlucky to miss selection in the initial squads for next month’s Hall of Fame Tribute Match at the MCG.

Simpson and midfielder Brent Harvey were the only North Melbourne players picked in the two squads from 80 players across the AFL competition.

The initial squads were announced on Tuesday morning but will be trimmed to 25-man sides ahead of the May 10 exhibition match.

Squads have been selected on 2007 form as well as performances seen so far this season.

The Kangaroos made a preliminary final last year and sit seventh on the ladder after round fours with two wins from four matches.

Given recent form is taken into account, Simpson believes teammates Harvey is almost certain to make the final cut to run out for Victoria next month, while a couple of other teammates deserved to at least make the first round of selections.

“I thought Corey Jones, with his consistent form this year and last year, might have been a pretty good chance [to make the squad],” Simpson said.

“I’m not quite sure if Daniel Pratt’s in the other mob, but I reckon those guys have been pretty consistent over the last 12 months.”

Simpson, at 32, is the oldest player in the Victorian squad and the second oldest in either squad behind Tigers forward Matthew Richardson.

“[It’s a] bit of a surprise … it’s a squad of 40 so let’s not get too carried away,” he said.

“I’ve never had the chance to play for the Big V, so just to be in the squad is a thrill.

“It’d be a great match. I think everyone who’s selected in the squad would put their hand up.”
