JARRAD McVeigh has been awarded the Bob Skilton Medal as the Swans' best and fairest player for season 2008.

With 578 points, he edged out Brett Kirk on 568 and Martin Mattner on 532.

Swans legend Skilton presented the award to the 23-year-old in front of over 600 people at a lavish function at a city hotel.

McVeigh was initially lost for words when making his acceptance speech, but he said this season was about him proving a point to the club's coaching staff.

"To the coaching staff last year, I know you weren't happy with the way I went about my footy but I guess in the off-season I was thinking 'stuff these guys I'm going to show them'.

"And I hope I've done that and repaid some of the faith you had in me.

"It's a privilege to play for this club. It's a special honour. The players are out there [giving] 110 per cent.

"It's the best club I've been at... well actually, it's the only club I've been at."

McVeigh, also paid tribute to the retiring Swans Ben Matthews and Peter Everitt who he said has made a "massive" contribution to the football club.

"The improvement that he's shown has been absolutely great," said Skilton of McVeigh. "He just seemed to have the happy knack of popping up at the right time to score."

McVeigh booted 32 goals for the season and picked up 467 disposals.

It was the sixth consecutive year that Brett Kirk has finished in the top two of voting for the Bob Skilton Medal. He was runner-up in 2003, 2004, winner in 2005, runner-up in 2006, winner in 2007 and now runner-up in 2008.
