ST KILDA has confirmed Matt Maguire will miss the rest of the season, after diagnosing the unlucky defender with a fractured bone in his foot.

The Saints are counting the costs of their narrow win over Richmond on Saturday night, with the young backman at the top of an extensive casualty list with his latest long-term injury.

Maguire, 23, has endured an horrific battle with his body in the past two years, after badly breaking his leg in round 18, 2006.

Last year, he came back into the side in round one but then broke the same foot and missed the next 12 games. He played a total of 10 matches for the year, and has managed only four this season after further complications with his leg.

On Saturday night against Richmond, Maguire fractured the fourth metatarsal in his "good" foot, effectively ending his season after round seven.

Meanwhile, the news was better for Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt, who was told he'll miss just three to four weeks with a strained medial ligament.

It was initially thought the spearhead could miss up to two months with the knee injury he sustained during the third term of the Saints' three-point win over the Tigers.

Midfielder Xavier Clarke is expected to miss three weeks after straining a hamstring, while defender Max Hudghton, who was a late withdrawal, will miss a fortnight with a similar complaint.

Midfielder Steven Baker is expected to play against Collingwood after escaping serious damage to the knee he jarred on the weekend, while ruckman Steven King is listed as two weeks from resuming, meaning he could also rejoin the side in round eight.
