Carlton have recovered from disappointing losses in the past two weeks to thump the winless Fremantle Dockers by 75 points at Optus Oval.

The Blues opened with a league record first quarter score for the season, keeping the Dockers goalless whilst kicking 9 goals 3 themselves to lead by 56 points.

Whilst looking likely to destroy Fremantle early, Carlton went on to drift to an easy but unimpressive victory kicking 19.17 (131) to 8.8 (56) with the Blues only kicking 10 goals to 8 after the first break.

Carlton was once again guilty of overusing the ball, particularly when entering their attacking 50-metre zone, and dropping its workrate when percentage was there for the taking.

It was still Carlton's biggest ever winning margin against Fremantle and their 10th of the season, but the Blues were lucky to have struck a poor opponent such was its ordinary form in the absence of injured ruckmen Matthew Allan and Trent Hotton plus forwards Lance Whitnall and Brendan Fevola.

Carlton was thrashed in the ruck division with the Dockers having 25 more hit-outs, however the Blues still managed to record 11 more centre clearances than the Dockers.

Stephen Silvagni was the impressive stand-in forward man and pulled in 13 marks, only marred by his poor finishing and occasional poor decisions to pass when within range as his confidence in his disposal waned.

Matthew Lappin was also outstanding up forward for the Blues kicking six goals as well as recording 27 possessions and 11 marks.

Eight Carlton players recorded more than 20 possessions for the day with Brett Ratten and rookie Jim Plunkett leading with 30 each.

Fremantle ruckman Justin Longmuir, capitalising on Carlton's lack of height, and 18-year-old Adam McPhee were among the few Dockers to impress.
