COLLINGWOOD midfielder Dane Swan will return to the Magpies' side this week to take on the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium but ruckman Darren Jolly will miss again despite hailing last week's training trip to Arizona a success.

Swan has been named for the Pies, as has Dale Thomas, who returns from suspension, but Jolly - despite his claim earlier in the week he was ready to play - will not return to the senior side this weekend.

Jolly has not played since round five and attended the 12-day training camp that ended last weekend with Swan, Brent Macaffer and Nathan Brown.

The Magpie outs are Simon Buckley (groin) and Alex Fasolo (omitted).

They will meet the Sydney Swans, who will be without their own key big man with Shane Mumford suspended for two weeks, and Alex Johnson, who is out with a calf.

Lewis Jetta has been omitted.

Hawthorn will get Chance Bateman back from an ankle injury earlier than expected while Brent Guerra returns from a perforated eardrum for the big clash with Essendon on Friday night at the MCG.

Lance Franklin is out suspended while Rick Ladson has been sidelined with a groin issue.

The Bombers have recalled ruckman David Hille, midfielder Andrew Welsh and forward Alwyn Davey while Kyle Hardingham has been suspended for one week, Cale Hooker is out with a hamstring and Stuart Crameri is out with soreness.

Western Bulldogs forward Barry Hall has been named to play his first senior game since round 10 - and his sixth for the season - but Brian Lake has missed the cut again.

Hall is one of two inclusions for the Dogs along with Christian Howard for their clash with Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon at Metricon Stadium, with Nathan Djerrkura and Tom Liberatore omitted.

Hall was photographed earlier in the week at Melbourne Airport as the Dogs prepared to fly to the Gold Coast a day earlier than expected in a bid to avoid the ash cloud.

Gold Coast will bring in another two debutants for their clash with the Dogs with Joel Wilkinson and Hayden Jolly to play their first games.

Charlie Dixon, Zac Smith and David Swallow are the other inclusions with Trent McKenzie and Sam Day rested, and Daniel Harris, Rex Liddy and Daniel Gorringe omitted.

Richmond has named athletic defender David Gourdis for his first AFL game for the season while Jake Batchelor returns after missing last weekend's win over the Brisbane Lions because of soreness.

The Tigers lose Jake King to a one-game suspension while Jayden Post has been omitted from the side set to take on Melbourne on Saturday at the MCG.

The Demons will get back ruckman Mark Jamar from the knee injury he sustained in round seven while Jordan Gysberts returns after being a late withdrawal last week with soreness.

Ruckman Max Gawn and defender Clint Bartram have been omitted.

Fremantle has regained its No.1 big man Aaron Sandilands, Rhys Palmer, Kepler Bradley, Dylan Roberton, Alex Silvagni and Josh Mellington, who will play his debut AFL match in his first season against the Brisbane Lions at Paterson Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sandilands has been out since round nine with a toe tendon injury while Bradley is back after being a late withdrawal last week and Silvagni from a serious groin injury.

The Lions have also been busy at the selection table with Cheynee Stiller, Andrew Raines, Jesse O'Brien, Bryce Retzlaff and Niall McKeever to come in.

McKeever, 22, is an Irish rookie who impressed the coaches last week with his performance for the Queensland state team in Western Australia.

The Lions have lost Mitch Clark (ankle), Todd Banfield (hamstring) and Josh Drummond (soreness) while Tom Collier and Josh Green have been omitted.

Geelong has named Jimmy Bartel for Sunday's early game against the Crows at Skilled Stadium. The classy onballer was subbed out of last weekend's game after suffering a concussion, but he dispelled any lingering doubts over his fitness to take his spot.

First-round draft pick Mitch Brown has been named at full-forward and will debut for the Cats after enduring a wretched run with injury in his first two years at the club.

Tom Gillies and Allen Christensen have also been named in the starting 18, but fellow inclusions Tom Hawkins, Shannon Byrnes, Steven Motlop and Dawson Simpson all appear on an extended bench.

Josh Hunt (suspended), Mathew Stokes (suspended), Nathan Vardy (soreness) and Darren Milburn (calf) all depart the team that defeated St Kilda.

Adelaide will hand 28-year-old elevated rookie Ian Callinan his long-awaited debut with Brent Reilly also in the starting 18, while Ivan Maric and Richard Tambling have been named on a seven-man bench.

Brad Symes comes out of the team with knee soreness.

Carlton has recalled Robbie Warnock to lead its ruck division after Shaun Hampson suffered a posterior cruciate ligament strain against the Swans that will sideline him for two months.

Nick Duigan (calf) is also out with Brock McLean, Dennis Armfield, Rhys O'Keeffe and Mark Austin on the bench.

Eric Mackenzie, Brad Sheppard and Koby Stevens have been added to the West Coast team to take on the Blues at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Port Adelaide has named an extended squad at this stage with four ins but have told Daniel Motlop he has been omitted already.

Steven Salopek, David Rodan, Mitch Banner and Andrew Moore are the inclusions for the clash with North Melbourne at AAMI Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Kangaroos have named Robbie Tarrant, Ben McKinley, Cam Richardson and Kieran Harper in their squad, while Todd Goldstein remains in the line up - and will travel to Adelaide - but he still needs to prove his fitness from the ankle injury he sustained last week.

Defender Scott McMahon will remain in Melbourne and miss the game owing to the impending birth of his first child.
