Seven Geelong players have been nominated in respected football writer Mile Sheahan’s annual top 50 list.
Joel Selwood was ranked at number 8, followed by Corey Enright (11), James Kelly (13), Matthew Scarlett (16), Steve Johnson (18), Jimmy Bartel (20) and Joel Corey (48).
Sheahan was full of praise for the Cats premiership heroes.
“The players' player,” he wrote of Selwood. “As tough as a cat's head and relentless in his attack on the ball or the ball-carrier.”
Best and fairest winner Enright was said to be, “the ultimate in quiet achievers. All-Australian for the fourth time. Close to the complete player: efficient, reliable, resilient. Not bad for No.47 in the 1999 national draft.”
Kelly, who earned All Australian honours for the first time was thought by Sheahan to be “deserves the ultimate honour of best player in a premiership year.”
Of Scarlett: “He's a champion. Of history. Excellent skills, outstanding composure, brilliant leadership. I haven't seen a more complete full-back.”
Johnson: “What a star. He is compulsory viewing whenever the ball is in his area. Top 10 for goals (50), top two for goal assists.”
Bartel: “Pretty handy at No. 20. As bizarre as it sounds, didn't make the All-Australian squad of 40. Super player. Deserving Norm Smith medal winner.”
Corey: “One of the forgotten heroes at Catland. Amazingly durable and productive over a long period.”
The top 50 is one of the talking points of the season, with debate throughout the footy world as to who deserves to be on the annual list.
