NEW Essendon player Brent Prismall is looking forward to the chance of a starting midfield position after a couple of seasons of frustration at Skilled Stadium.

While the 22-year-old was grateful for his time at Geelong alongside some of the biggest names in the game he is aware he is more likely to gain greater opportunities at Essendon in coming seasons.

He said it was that opportunity to join an exciting young list, coupled with the Bombers' eagerness to pursue him in recent weeks, that swayed him to leave the Cattery, a decision he only came to a week ago.

He played 25 games for Geelong, including 12 this season before injuring his knee.

"I had it sort of going through my head that maybe another club might be a better choice," Prismall said from Windy Hill on Friday afternoon.

"I probably made up my mind last Thursday or Friday that I wanted to have a look at a few offers.

"Essendon were pretty professional about it and yeah, I'm rapt to be here."

The Bombers and the Cats struck a deal on Friday that saw the promising midfielder find his new home, with Essendon relinquishing its third-round pick (selection no.39) in next month's national draft to Geelongl.

Decked out in his red and black polo shirt, Prismall said it was yet to "sink in" that he was now a Bomber.

However it will soon become apparent when he returns to training early next month, with the familiar faces – those who have for so long kept him yo-yoing between senior and VFL football – no longer there.

"Yeah, obviously there's some quality players at Geelong with Ablett and Bartel and Corey and the like, so at times it was pretty frustrating," Prismall said.

"But I got a few opportunities there and hopefully I can get a few more here and really make Essendon a really good club and moving forward it'll be really exciting."

The prospect of a permanent centre-square role has enormous appeal for the long-kicking youngster, and it is one he believes achievable once he overcomes an anterior cruciate injury.

"It's something that I look forward to and hopefully I can get that opportunity," he said.

"It was probably going to be tough at Geelong … I'll be doing my best and working my arse off to get in there."

The big query Essendon fans would have is how Prismall's knee is faring after he ruptured his ACL last month.

Prismall says the early signs are good, but like his coach he is refusing to put a timeframe on his return.

He has resumed swimming and weights and hopes to be back running by Christmas.

But Prismall, who has never played against the Dons and is yet to meet his teammates, will take a cautious approach.

"I'm not sure about round one, but hopefully early on in the year I can get back," he said.

"It's sort of a big injury , and like I said, I'm not going to rush it, and when it feels good, it feels good and that's when I'll play, when it's right to go.

"I'm going to be patient and hopefully get it right and come back and play some good football."
