It's been a pre-season to remember for Sam Wright for all the wrong reasons, but now the exciting 20 year-old is beginning to find his feet.

Struck down with pneumonia following the 2010 season, the rising star was forced to sit out the majority of the club's high-altitude camp in Utah. Five months after contracting the illness, he’s only now beginning to make inroads.

"It was a week after the end of the season that I got it (pneumonia), and two months on it still hadn't gone," Wright told kangaroos.com.au following training.

"After the pneumonia, because it had dragged on so long without me getting the right medication from my local doctor, it turned into post-illness fatigue. I was struggling to stay awake and do day-to-day things."

Despite the setback, the Katamatite junior is back into full training and shed an impressive 35 seconds off his pre-christmas time around Princes Park last week.

"It's a massive difference after getting back from Utah, just in energy levels and being able to back up the next day without sleeping 15 hours a night," Wright added.

"In Utah I felt like I was pushing my hardest but my body wouldn't let me work to my peak. Now I am pushing just as hard but my body is starting to really pick up again and respond."

2010 proved a break-out a year for Wright. He was awarded with a NAB Rising Star nomination for his efforts against the Eagles in round 21 and secured a permanent position in the Roos' forward line.

And while he's excited to be back to full fitness, Wright is more than willing to use his illness as an excuse to get out of having to do household chores.

"I've pulled it out a few times, and I reckon I'll keep doing it, but Ziebs (Jack Ziebell) loves cooking anyway. He's like a mum."
