The final paperwork will be officially lodged with the AFL on Monday.
With the Clark deal finally completed, the Lions now boast two first round selections (Pick No.8 and Pick No.12 overall) at next month’s 2011 AFL National Draft, together with priority selection (Pick No.29 overall), compensation selection (Pick No.30 overall), and an early second round selection (Pick No.34 overall).
Lions National Talent Manager, Rob Kerr, said that while Clark, 23, had initially requested a move back home to Western Australia, it was critical the Club also acted in its own best interests as well as its members.
“We saw Mitch as a required player, but when he advised us that he wasn’t renewing his contract and wanted to head home, we agreed to help him out best we can during Trade Week provided we received an outcome that could move our club forward,” Kerr said.
“Unfortunately Fremantle's initial offer was below expectations and the subsequent delay in negotiations left the door ajar for other interested parties."
“When Melbourne emerged with a decisive and attractive offer, it certainly sparked our interest.”
“It’s important to note that throughout the entire process, we maintained dialogue with Mitch and his management and ultimately it was Mitch's decision to continue his career with the Demons,” Kerr said.
“At all times and considering all factors, we have acted in the best interests of the Club. We have been able to secure another first round pick, which is significant in helping develop our list.”
“To have two picks inside the top 12 in a compromised draft is a terrific result, and will put us in a good position to recruit two talented young players next month.”
Clark departs the Lions after playing 82 games and kicking 61 goals in six seasons.
The Lions would like to thank Mitch for his contribution to the Club.
The Lions will issue a full summary of the Club’s trade activity following the Trade Week deadline at 2pm on Monday 17 October.
