KICKING for goal at one end was an adventure, but there were no excuses for St Kilda as they trained on Wednesday in Melbourne's wild weather.

A goalpost at the northern end of their Moorabbin ground toppled over and the posts holding up the netting behind those goals were also coming off second-best as the city weathered gale-force winds.

The Saints considered trying to organise an indoor session, but coach Ross Lyon said the tough conditions would help his team.

"It's a good challenge, to work on your technique, good techniques tend to stand up under difficult conditions," he said.

"We'll shorten the drills a little bit ... we'll train intensely, we can wear errors, as long as the enthusiasm is there and you support each other.

"We're a little bit worried, a corrugated iron sheet came off before, there's a little bit of risk, but if we don't have an alternative there's not much we can do about it."

The conditions could not be more of a contrast to Friday night, when the Saints will play the Western Bulldogs under the Telstra Dome roof.

"It is relevant, they need to get some kilometres under their belt, we tend to have a core session where they train really hard each week, get the intensity up and really try to make it specific to AFL football," Lyon said.

"It's really important we do have a good session."
