The commencement of Subiaco Oval’s Centenary celebrations was officially launched this morning by Centenary Patron and Mayor of Subiaco Heather Henderson, WAFC Commissioner Rob McKenzie and Sandover Medallist and Fremantle Player Development Coach Steve Malaxos.
Mayor Henderson was honoured to be part of the centenary celebrations in her role as Mayor of Subiaco and Centenary Patron, and emphasized the role Subiaco Oval plays in the lives of many West Australians.
“Subiaco Oval is historically important to the many participants and spectators of sport in Western Australia. It becomes a cauldron of emotion - elation and ecstasy,” said Mayor Henderson.
Mayor Henderson announced some of the activities to celebrate the centenary of Subiaco Oval, including the WAFL match between Subiaco Football Club and East Perth Football Club on Saturday 10 May to recreate the first official league match at the oval in 1908. Other events include a Subiaco Oval heritage exhibition at the City of Subiaco Museum and a commemorative DVD.
WAFC Commissioner Rob McKenzie said Subiaco Oval was culturally significant as a venue, but also as a resource to fund junior sport.
“Subiaco Oval is the lifeblood of football and community activity. The money generated from Subiaco Oval supports over 166,000 players, administrators and volunteers involved with football every year.”
Mr McKenzie also announced the completion of the Sandover Medal Walk, located outside Subiaco Oval along Roberts Road, starting from Gate 13 and continuing along the west side of Haydn Bunton Drive.
“The ground means a lot to everyone and everyone in WA has great memories of the game at Subiaco Oval. The WAFC is proud to honour the champions of the game, with the completion of the Sandover Medal Walk,” said Mr McKenzie.
Steve has taken centre stage on Subiaco Oval over the years as a WA Football legend and was on hand at the official announcement of the completion of the Sandover Oval Medal walk. He said he was honoured to be a part of the Sandover Medal Walk.
“It is important to remember the heritage of the great players of the past, and I’m honoured to be a part of that heritage,” Steve said.
