Diabetes
This month there’s plenty of 1Seven program news – find out about our Awards, prizes, Captains and giveaways.
We also delve into the details of diabetes, as this month played host to Diabetes Week (13th to 19th July) as there seems to be a constant focus on diabetes in the news these days.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when a person's own immune system destroys beta cells in the pancreas. Beta cells sense blood glucose and produce the hormone insulin, which regulates glucose and converts it to energy. Formerly called 'juvenile onset diabetes', type 1 diabetes usually develops in children and young adults. It accounts for 10 to15 per cent of people with diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 85 per cent of all cases of diabetes, usually developing in adults over the age of 40. About 80 per cent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight, while a family history of the disease also increases an individual’s chance of contracting it. Type 2 diabeteswas previously thought to develop when a person was middle aged or elderly, but with childhood overweight and obesity at record levels, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents is rising.
What does this mean for kids and families? What can exercise offer for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes? To find out more read on…
