Luke Thompson had his first taste of SANFL Premiership glory when the Eagles defeated Central District in a thrilling Grand Final on Sunday.

Going into the game as underdogs, the Eagles held on against a fast finishing Bulldogs outfit to win by three points.

Thompson played predominantly as a forward but was moved back into defence late in the game and took an important pack mark in the final moments of the last quarter. He finished with four kicks, two handballs and three tackles.

Speaking with afc.com.au on Monday, Thompson knew Central District would finish strongly and he was glad they were able to stay in front.

“Towards the end of the game it was intense because you knew they were coming at us so we just had to hold on," Thompson said.

“I was up forward and got moved down back near the end. When I took that mark I just wanted the siren to go straight away.”

Playing in his first SANFL Grand Final, Thompson had success back at home with his old club Timboon, but said the celebrations and emotions after the game he will never forget.

“It’s a pretty exciting feeling. Back at Woodville Oval the celebrations were great and it all sunk in as the night went on."

“The feeling after the game was awesome and in the rooms after with all the boys and the supporters."

"I won a senior Grand Final back at home with Timboon but this is obviously my first SANFL flag and it’s a great feeling.”

It was heartbreak for rookie Ian Callinan as the minor premiers narrowly missed out on winning their fifth premiership in a row.

Callinan played in the midfield and up forward and worked his way into the game, having a big influence after half time. He collected 19 kicks (including 11 inside 50s), five handballs and four tackles.

Glenelg won the SANFL Reserves Grand Final by 11 points with former Crow Ken McGregor winning a premiership in his first year as coach.
