FORMER Melbourne ruckman Jeff White says he still believes he has something to offer at AFL level after being delisted by the Demons.
The 31-year-old says that while no AFL clubs have spoken to him about playing next year, he still had a small hope that he would be picked up in the national or pre-season draft.
“I’ve had some injuries in my career but I’m fit and I’m ready to go. I played all the games this year and I feel like I’ve still got another year or two in me and if I can assist up-and-coming ruckmen at another club I’d love the opportunity,” White told SEN.
The former No.1 draft pick is now based on the Gold Coast but said he had not spoken with new Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss about the possibility of a role on or off the field.
“A lot of people have told me I should ring Vossy but I guess that’s what you pay your managers for and hopefully they can do something in the next month or so. I’ll have to wait and see,” he said.
“At the moment I’m just putting myself in the draft and then thinking about life after AFL because either way I’m going to have to find a position up here.”
White said if no clubs showed interest he would be happy to play with a local club on the Gold Coast.
He said he is keeping fit despite being forced to train by himself without any teammates around.
“I’ve never been in this position. I’ve just joined the local golf club up here and they’ve got a gym so I’ve been training there and just trying to keep myself fit and motivated,” he said.
“I feel as fit as I have ever been and as mobile as I’ve ever been. I’m strong and feel like I’ve got plenty of spring in my legs, I played basketball on Monday night and felt like I was jumping around like an 18-year-old.”
White said he harboured no grudge towards the Demons who cut him despite playing 15 games this year.
“The club was trying to blood some younger fellas that were coming through. That’s the track clubs are going down and I totally understand that,” he said.
“Hawthorn did that a couple of years ago and look at the success they had this year.”
