SYDNEY Swans defender Leo Barry has killed off any speculation that this season would be his last by committing to the club for 2009.

However, it comes with confirmation that it will definitely be the 31-year-old's final season at the level – completing a decorated career that commenced with a 1995 debut.

Barry has played a career total of 234 games, including 17 finals, and was a key member of the club's premiership campaign of 2005.

He met with coach Paul Roos and general manager of football operations Andrew Ireland last week, and accepted the one-year deal on Tuesday.

"I am excited about playing another year, given it is my last season I will go out and enjoy each game," Barry said in a statement released by the Swans.

"It was an easy decision in the end because I believe I can still make a contribution to the team.

"We have a good side but I understand it is going to be a bit of a transition year for some of the senior players."

Roos expressed his pleasure at Barry's decision to play on.

"We are pleased Leo has agreed to one final year with the Sydney Swans and we still see him in our best 22 going into season 2009," he said.

"Equally, we feel that Leo can help us as a senior player in helping develop our young defenders with an eye to the future in what is becoming a transition period for the club."

Ruckman Peter Everitt announced his retirement after the loss to the Dogs, while premiership player Ben Mathews confirmed the end of his career ahead of the elimination final win over North Melbourne.
