James McDonald has been rewarded for his career-best 2006 season by being promoted into Melbourne's leadership group for next season. The Demons announced two changes to the group on Friday with McDonald and young gun Brock McLean replacing Brad Miller and Russell Robertson.McDonald and McLean join skipper David Neitz (who is yet to be confirmed for that role in 2007), Cameron Bruce and Brad Green as the Dees' official leaders next season. The leadership group was voted upon by both the Melbourne players and football department staff. For McDonald, his elevation caps off a stellar year in which he was named in the All-Australian side and won the Demons' best and fairest for the first time and was picked in the Australian side to tour Ireland.McLean, at just 20, is by far the youngest player in the group with his elevation also coming after a stellar 2006 season."It's a great honour to be in the group but really it means nothing unless I set a positive example on the field and around the club," McLean said."That’s what I’ll be aiming to do and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”Melbourne coach Neale Daniher was excited by the addition of McDonald and McLean into the leadership group."Brock at the young age of 20 and James at age 30 both deserve their appointments," Daniher said."It was also great to see that young players in Aaron Davey and Jared Rivers made it through to the top 10 nominations for the first time.'"We are also fortunate that Brad and Russell have spent a year in the group and have had valuable exposure to the responsibilities of leadership.""And when you put these guys together with other experienced players such as Adem Yze, Jeff White, Nathan Brown and Ben Holland, you can see that we have an ever expanding group of team leaders around the club."
