After being among the top vote-getters in the last two seasons, Ablett is the favourite to take home the award in 2009.
Although Mooney is right behind Ablett for the award, the tall would also love to see a fellow power forward take home the medal.
"I'd love to see to 'Rooey' (Nick Riewoldt) or 'Browny' (Jonathan Brown) win it," he said from AFL House on Sunday.
"But I'd love to see Gaz win it, because he does deserve to win it.
"He's been the best player over the last three years and he probably hasn't been rewarded, so he deserves one."
Another Brownlow for the club would be an ideal lead-in to the grand final but Mooney said an even greater motivator was last year's loss to Hawthorn.
"It has been in the back of everyone's minds. It's not something that we've talked about or sat down and really discussed," Mooney said.
"From the moment we got back to pre-season, you could see it was burning in everybody, so hopefully with a bit of luck we'll come away with the win.
"I always thought you could never redeem it, but if we win two out of three, then it's a great record and you couldn't ask for much more."
One of the keys to a second premiership will be stopping Saints star Nick Riewoldt, but Mooney said that job was just one of a number of tasks the Cats had to complete in order to taste success on Saturday.
"We're not going to base our whole game around Rooey," he said.
"They're a great side. They haven't won 20 games in the home-and-away season just on the back of Rooey.
"We've got a whole team to look after, so I'm sure we'll put in some good homework and I'm sure we'll do our due diligence and see how we go."
