RICHMOND faces a stern test against St Kilda on the big stage of Friday night football this week, but Tigers' skipper Chris Newman is undaunted by the prospect of taking on one of the power sides of the past few seasons.
The Saints will take a 13-game winning streak over Richmond into the clash that dates back to 2003, but Newman wasn't interested in a history lesson when he spoke to the media on Tuesday.
"I think the last couple of years we've been reasonably competitive [with them]," Newman said.
"We feel like we've got a good list now. We didn't get the result last week which was disappointing, but we were in a position to win the game.
"We're very much looking forward to the challenge."
Newman said that his team had taken great confidence out of giving Carlton a huge scare in the opening match of the season.
A six-goal bag by Jack Riewoldt propelled the Tigers to a surprise 14-point lead at three-quarter time against the Blues, but the reigning Coleman medallist said adding to his own goal tally wasn't the key to defeating St Kilda.
"I'm just going to keep playing my role for the side and try to provide whatever I can for the club," Riewoldt said.
"We've played some good footy against the Saints as a squad over the last few years. We're going in under no illusions - they've played in two grand finals last year and they've been right up there over the last four or five years.
"It's going to be a tough game, but if we can play our game plan right then we're going to be in there with a shot."
Richmond unveiled its new training facility at Punt Road to the media on Tuesday, and Newman said the $20 million centre would give his side every chance to succeed.
"Given where we've come from and what we needed to put in place to improve, I think these facilities provide us with everything we need," he said.
"The boys have settled in very nicely and we're looking forward to all the different things that are to come.
"Coming from the Jack Dyer stand to over here - it's a huge change and a change that we probably needed. We fell behind in that area and we're state-of-the-art now, so it's a huge difference. I think it will make a difference on the field."
