Coburg celebrated the opening of the Highgate Reserve facility in Craigieburn with a thrilling six-point victory over Box Hill on Saturday.
Dean Polo kicked the winning goal with seconds remaining to help the Tigers to their first win of the VFL season.
Coburg overcame some blustery conditions, and a 17-point deficit late in the game, in a performance coach David Newett believes was three weeks in the making.
“It was just reward for hard work they’ve put in early this season,” Newett said.
“We have come so close in previous two games, which gave them the determination in the last quarter when it was required.
“We just kept attacking in the last quarter and somehow found a way to get a result.”
The Tigers were helped by a strong contingent of Richmond-listed players, including Daniel Connors (25 possessions), Dean Polo (24, two goals), Jeromey Webberley (21) and David Gourdis (18).
“We had some really good contributors coming back into the team who showed great leadership - guys like Morton, Post, Gourdis, Graham and Browne,” Newett said.
“Dean Polo was able to perform well in roles all over the ground, including sneaking forward and having an impact.
“Jake King kicked goals at crucial times, and Relton Roberts came alive with some important touches in last quarter.
“Dan Connors was outstanding all day, playing off half back. He provided good run and rebound, along with Jeromey Webberley.”
Coburg travels to Trevor Barker Oval to play Sandringham this Sunday May 2, at 2pm.
