A break-out season in 2009 meant even further responsibility would fall on the shoulders of Scott Thompson under a new coach.

While he was again a solid performer, he struggled to reach the lofty heights of his previous year and did find himself playing second fiddle in defence at times to the ever-improving Nathan Grima.

Nevertheless, Thompson was a mainstay in the North Melbourne defence and despite being beaten by some proven goal-kickers, he saluted against most of those who dared to take him on.

He continued to get under the skin of his opponents, particularly the Bulldogs' Barry Hall in their infamous round nine clash, and had two stand-out performances in round 12 and round 21 which netted Brownlow votes.

The 24 year-old was terrific late in the season and will continue to benefit from the experienced defenders around him.

AFL.com.au’s Steve Lavell says: Often looked overwhelmed at full-back, with his better performances coming against smaller opponents. Round-nine altercation with Barry Hall encouraged him to pull back on his niggling and focus more on his game. Disposal could be better.
