THE AFL has ruled that Carlton has no case to answer in the aftermath of Tony Liberatore's controversial interview on The Footy Show last week.
Liberatore, an assistant coach with Carlton in 2007, reignited the controversial 'tanking' issue in an interview with Craig Hutchison on Channel Nine's flagship football program last Thursday.
The AFL subsequently arranged to speak with Liberatore, as well as officials from Carlton, following that interview, and has since decided that it will not take any further action on the matter based on their responses.
In a statement released by the AFL, it was revealed that Liberatore told the league's legal representatives that it was his view that at all times Carlton's players played to win matches.
He also confirmed that at no stage was anything said to him, or did he hear anything, to the effect that Carlton should not try to win matches.
The 1990 Brownlow medallist told the AFL that his primary concern related to Carlton’s selection policy and the coaching tactics in the first quarter of the last match of the 2007 season.
The AFL’s general manager of legal and business affairs, Andrew Dillon, accompanied by an external lawyer, also met with Carlton chief Greg Swann and Carlton coach Brett Ratten on Tuesday to discuss the matters raised by Liberatore before coming to his decision.
