This month we are turning our attention to the environment. Sunday 5 June is World Environment Day, which reminds us not only to be aware of how our daily activities can impact on the environment, but also highlights that living an active, sustainable lifestyle can have benefits for our health as well.

Luckily, there are plenty of things we can do in our own small way to improve our local environment. Simple activities like a neighbourhood clean-up, planting a tree or even collecting up some recyclable products around the home are all ways to keep us moving and still do our bit for the globe!

For teachers this month we look at Schools Striking The Right Balance with how we use our energy. Parents can Embrace Outdoors Play and get active with their children. And finally, for kids we have some advice on Exploring Your Surroundings and an update on how Parks Promote Fitness.

TEACHERS

AFL Resource: Auskick Lesson Plans
An array of activities and lesson plans to teach Australian Football to students aged between 9-10 years.

Netball Activity:
Clean Up Your Rubbish
•    Divide the third in half with a line down the middle and approximately eight players on each side of the line
•    Spread out a large number of screwed up pieces of newspaper over the two areas
•    On the command the children must pick up the rubbish in their area and shoulder pass it to the opposite teams area
•    After a set time, coach signals time, winning team is the one with the least bits of rubbish in their ‘yard’
•    Rubbish outside the area belongs to the team who threw the rubbish not the team whose area is sits outside

Schools Striking The Right Balance

Energy - and how we use it - is one of the most important issues of our time. When it comes to creating a healthy, sustainable future, schools are ideal places for exploring creative solutions for finding the right balance.

PARENTS

Embrace Outdoors Play
No one wants their children to get hurt but experts are now suggesting that wrapping kids in cotton wool, and not allowing them to play outside, may be doing them more harm than good.

KIDS

Exploring Your Surroundings

How often have you told your mum or dad that you have "nothing to do"? Getting to know your local area might mean you never have an excuse to be bored.

Parks Promote Fitness
Previous studies have shown that adults who live in neighbourhoods with more green spaces, including parks and sports grounds, are more likely to spend time in physical activity, especially walking and cycling, than those who don’t. But what about young people?
