Darren Milburn is considered by many of his peers as the quiet, laid back type.

Even constant hounding from irate Carlton supporters doesn’t seem to unnerve him as he takes whatever lies before him in his stride.

But the tempo of his voice raises a notch when he casts his mind back to April this year, 10th of April to be exact. That was when Darren and partner Tania welcomed the arrival of their daughter Imogen Joy.

"Words cant describe it. It's an unbelievable experience" was Darren's initial response when quizzed about his thoughts on becoming a dad for the first time.

"Its amazing knowing that 'we' actually created this person".

26-year-old Milburn and partner Tania hail from Kilmore, and have known each other since High School. It was not only a 'first' for them but also for the respective grand parents.

"She's the first one (grandchild) on both sides, so yeah she's been getting quite a bit of attention", Darren remarked.

"The support has been great and both families have come down (from Kilmore) to help us out".

So how has this changed, the sometimes-laconic defender's outlook on life?

"Life is not just about you. There is someone who are responsible for and you have to worry and care about each day".

Now in his 7th season with the Cats, Darren has entrenched himself as a member of the durable 'back six’, which includes the likes of seasoned campaigners Matty Scarlett, Tom Harley and Brenton Sanderson.

His long reaching punch from behind has become a trademark of his play and his duel with Saint gun, Nick Riewoldt, in the last game of the season was worth the entry fee alone.

Darren, who was recruited to the club as a midfielder, does enjoy a stint on the ball. With his form waning prior to Round 11, Darren was started in the midfield by the match committee and repaid their faith with a stunning best on ground performance against Carlton at Telstra Dome.

"I get a different role almost every week. I don’t mind where I play" was a predictable response.

Darren has swapped the odd note with other Cat dads such as Ben Graham, Matt Scarlett and Reserves skipper Tim McGrath, but overall has not encountered many sleepless nights, as one would imagine.

"A few people have mentioned that she's similar to me. She's quite laid back'.

Darren looks forward to spending more time with Imogen and further helping out Tania now that the season is over.

While he full endorses fatherhood, for the moment, he and Tania are taking it - 'one baby at a time'.
